Nigel Adkins has revealed that Ondrej Mazuch will miss the start of the season with a knee injury.
The centre-back has been out of action since limping off in the Tigers’ 2-1 friendly win over Maritimo in Portugal 11 days ago, and is now set for an extended spell on the sidelines.
“Ondrej picked up an injury in the first game in Portugal, landed very heavy on his knee, and now he’s going to miss the start of the season,” said Adkins.
“That’s a big shame. We’ll just see how it progresses. Without putting a timeframe on it, he’s potentially going to be out for a couple of months
“You feel for the big man because he missed a lot of last season. He got injured in the last game of last season but he’d come back and done every session.
“He was looking fit and strong but he’s stretched for a ball and landed heavily on the ground.
“It’s disappointing for the lad himself and its disappointing for the team. But, it’s something that we can’t control and we just have to get on with things.”
Jarrod Bowen and Jon Toral were also missing from the squad that travelled to face League One Rochdale on Saturday, although neither player’s problem is considered serious.
Reflecting on their absence, Adkins added: “We played against Lincoln in midweek and Jarrod got a nasty kick on his foot. He’ll be touch and go for Tuesday night but we’ll just have to wait and see.
“He’s looking in great nick though, which is a huge positive for us as he looks to build on his impressive campaign last term.
“Jon Toral felt a little niggle ahead of the game and we weren’t prepared to risk him. He won’t play against Newcastle either and we’ll just have to see how he fares in training during the rest of the week.”
