Reece Burke says a chat with Head Coach Nigel Adkins was a key factor in persuading him to end a long association with West Ham United to join Hull City.
Amidst reported interest from other clubs, 21-year-old centre back Burke put pen-to-paper with the Tigers on Tuesday and believes his and Adkins’ style of football are a good match.
“I had a good chat with him and it’s the way that he wants his team to play – he wants his centre halves to be ball-playing centre halves and that is something that I’ve maybe missed in some of the spells I’ve had out on loan,” said Burke.
“It’s the way that he is as well – he wants to fill his squad with good character and I’m really looking forward to getting to know the rest of the players.
“I like to get on the ball as a centre-half and want to be in a team that wants to play. I can play as a left or right-sided centre-half, and I’ve played as a right back as well so I’m looking forward to seeing what the season brings.”
Although Burke has left a Premier League club to move to the KCOM Stadium, the Championship is a division that he is familiar with following loan spells with Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers.
35 league appearances have been banked during spells in the north west and have provided a valuable learning curve for the former England U18, U19 and U20 international.
“I had a season in League One with Bradford first but the next step after that was obviously the Championship,” continued Burke.
“It’s a very physical league and the experience I gained during those spells with Wigan and Bolton was very, very important.
“The Championship is probably one of the hardest leagues around but I enjoy that and hopefully I can help Hull City to push on in this division.”
In a busy couple of days that have taken him from West Ham’s pre-season training camp in Switzerland to Hull and now out to Portugal where the Tigers are based for the week, Burke admits he is ready to get his training kit on and get back to work.
“I can’t wait to meet up with the lads. Switzerland was good and I’ve had a good week of training, but I’m buzzing that this move has all gone through now and I’m looking forward to getting my boots back on.”
