Nigel Adkins was left to reflect on a crazy afternoon that saw the Tigers secure their Championship status for next season with an almost unbelievable 5-5 draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Adkins saw his side come from 3-1 and 4-2 down to lead 5-4 going into added time before a late equaliser cruelly denied them all three points.
“It was an exciting, entertaining game with both sets of fans right behind their team,” said Adkins.
“I thought we played really well to start with and offered some good passing football.
“We were controlling a game away from home against a team still fighting for a play-off place and we got ourselves in front through a great finish from Harry Wilson which came at the end of some lovely play.
“We then allowed them back into it by giving a few cheap passes away and that got Bristol City onto the front foot. We gave two very poor goals away to go in at half time 2-1 down.
“It then goes to 3-1, but the players showed great character to hit back. A great ball from Angus MacDonald got Fikayo Tomori in for a great header and Fik actually scored again but an offside was given which I thought was a mistake.
“Bristol City then got another bit of fortune to make it 4-2 and you’re left thinking ‘oh here we go’.
“We kept playing with a purpose, though, and we were bright in moving the ball around. We played some intelligent football to get back in the game again with Harry Wilson and Abel Hernandez scoring to make it 4-4.
“I was really pleased with our fifth goal because Kamil Grosicki was so unselfish in squaring the ball for Fraizer Campbell to score. It showed great appreciation of a team-mate.
“Unfortunately they got an equaliser in added time, but even then we could have scored twice more after that.
“Great credit goes to the players, though, for the way they fought back from 3-1 and 4-2 down.
“From my point of view, I’m pleased that we’re going to be in the Championship next season and we’ve got a couple of games left now to try and build on the momentum and good form that we’ve been showing.
