Adkins Pleased With First Workout

Nigel Adkins described Tuesday night’s pre-season friendly against Portuguese side C.S. Maritimo as a good workout.

The Tigers won the game 2-1 thanks to late goals from Fraizer Campbell and Jon Toral, but it was the minutes under the belt that pleased Adkins most.

“I’m not too bothered about the scorelines through pre-season, I’ll be honest,” said Adkins.

“This was our first game and the players have had 45 minutes each of football against a very good side. There are things that we’re trying to work on and all-in-all this was a good workout for us.

“We’re two-and-a-half weeks in and the players are working really hard. We’ve got a programme that we know works if everybody applies themselves correctly.

“We looked to press our opposition and Fraizer managed to capitalise on that for his goal. We look to press from the front and maybe we could have scored three or four in the first half. Fraizer’s movement has then won us a penalty after he got onto a good Jon Toral pass.

“We can look forward to our next game now on Friday, and we’ve got some hard training sessions before that as well.”

Adkins confirmed after the game that both Ondrej Mazuch (knee) and Jarrod Bowen (cut) are doubts for Friday’s match against S.C. Braga after leaving Tuesday night’s action during the first half.
